2. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • Q: How do I run a SQL query?

A: Click on a SQL cell and press Cmd+Enter (⌘↵) to execute the query. Results appear directly below the cell. You can also click the green play button in the cell toolbar.

  • Q: What keyboard shortcuts are available?

A: QueryDuck uses Jupyter-style navigation. Press Escape to enter command mode, then: j/k or arrows to navigate cells, Enter to edit, a/b to insert cells above/below, dd to delete, m to convert to markdown, y to convert to SQL. Press ⌘↵ to run a cell.

  • Q: How do I import my data files?

A: Click 'Import Data' in the sidebar or drag files directly into the app. QueryDuck supports CSV, Parquet, JSON, and Excel files. Imported data appears as tables in your project.

  • Q: How do I connect to a remote database?

A: Click 'Add Connection' in the Connections section of the sidebar. QueryDuck supports PostgreSQL, MySQL, and cloud storage (Google Cloud Storage, S3). Remote connections require QueryDuck Pro.

  • Q: What is DuckDB?

A: DuckDB is an embedded analytical database - think SQLite but optimized for analytics. It's incredibly fast, handles large datasets on your laptop, and supports standard SQL with powerful extensions.

  • Q: Can I query CSV files directly without importing?

A: Yes! You can query CSV files directly using: SELECT * FROM 'path/to/file.csv'. DuckDB automatically infers the schema.

  • Q: How do I create a chart from my query results?

A: After running a query, click the chart icon (📊) in the results toolbar. Choose your chart type, and QueryDuck will auto-detect the best columns for X and Y axes. You can customize in the Chart Options panel.

  • Q: What's the difference between Free and Pro?

A: The Free version includes unlimited notebooks, local file support, basic charts, and SQL execution. Pro adds remote database connections, cloud storage support, advanced charts, high-res export, PDF/HTML export, and priority support.

  • Q: How do I restore my purchase on a new Mac?

A: Open QueryDuck Settings, scroll to the 'QueryDuck Pro' section, and click 'Restore Purchases'. Make sure you're signed into the same Apple ID you used for the original purchase.

  • Q: Where is my data stored?

A: All QueryDuck projects are stored locally on your Mac in the standard Documents folder. Projects are saved as .queryduck files that you can backup, version control, or share.

4. Troubleshooting Resources

  • Issue: Query is running slowly.

    • Large CSV/Parquet files can be slow on first query as DuckDB loads and indexes them.
    • Consider adding LIMIT to test queries before running on full datasets.
    • For very large files (>1GB), consider converting to Parquet format for better performance.
  • Issue: Can't connect to PostgreSQL database.

    • Verify your connection details (host, port, database, username, password).
    • Ensure the database server allows connections from your IP address.
    • Check if SSL is required and enable it in the connection settings.
    • Remote connections require QueryDuck Pro.
  • Issue: Purchase not recognized / Pro features locked.

    • Go to Settings and click 'Restore Purchases'.
    • Ensure you're signed into the correct Apple ID.
    • Check your internet connection and try again.
  • Issue: Chart not displaying correctly.

    • Ensure you have at least one numeric column selected for the Y-axis.
    • Try clicking 'Auto-detect' to let QueryDuck suggest the best chart configuration.
    • Some chart types require specific data formats (e.g., dates for time series).
  • Issue: Imported file shows wrong data types.

    • DuckDB auto-detects types from the first rows. For explicit types, use CAST in your query.
    • For CSV files with special formats, you can specify types when querying: SELECT * FROM read_csv('file.csv', types={'column': 'INTEGER'})
