2. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
-
Q: What does ProcessGenie show me?
A: ProcessGenie displays all running processes on your Mac with real-time CPU usage, memory consumption, PID, and user. It also shows per-core CPU load, total system CPU, memory pressure, load averages, and system uptime.
-
Q: How do I find a specific process?
A: Use the search bar at the top (or press / to focus it). Type any part of a process name, PID, or username. The list filters in real time as you type.
-
Q: What's the difference between Terminate and Force Kill?
A: Terminate sends SIGTERM, which asks the process to shut down gracefully — it can save state and clean up. Force Kill sends SIGKILL, which immediately stops the process with no chance to clean up. Use Force Kill only for frozen or unresponsive apps.
-
Q: What are the Pro features?
A: Pro unlocks: focused process CPU and memory history charts, CSV data export, process tree view, force kill (SIGKILL), and advanced UI tuning (row density and chart intensity sliders). Core monitoring, search, sorting, and safe terminate are free.
-
Q: How do I restore my purchase on a new Mac?
A: Open ProcessGenie, go to Settings, and click 'Restore Purchases'. Make sure you're signed into the same Apple ID you used for the original purchase.
-
Q: How do I export process data?
A: Select a process to open the focus panel, then click 'Save CSV' to save to a file or 'Copy CSV' to copy the data to your clipboard. The CSV includes timestamps, CPU percentage, and memory usage for every recorded sample.
-
Q: What do the CPU core colors mean?
A: Green means low usage (under 40%), yellow means moderate (40-75%), orange means high (75-100%), and red means the core is fully saturated or overloaded.
-
Q: Can I change how often ProcessGenie samples?
A: Yes. Go to the sampling controls and choose between 250ms, 500ms, 1 second, or 2 second intervals. Faster intervals give more granular data but use slightly more CPU.
-
Q: Does ProcessGenie support keyboard navigation?
A: Yes. Use j/k or arrow keys to navigate the process list, / to search, Enter to open the focus panel, c to copy PID, t to terminate, and Esc to close panels.
-
Q: What macOS versions are supported?
A: ProcessGenie requires macOS 14.0 (Sonoma) or later.
3. Feature Overview
ProcessGenie provides real-time process monitoring, system overview, deep process analysis, and process control — all in one native macOS window.
4. Troubleshooting Resources
-
Issue: ProcessGenie shows high CPU usage for itself.
- This is normal during the first few seconds as ProcessGenie initializes and scans all processes.
- Try increasing the sample interval in Settings (e.g., from 250ms to 1s) to reduce CPU usage.
- If the issue persists, quit and restart ProcessGenie.
-
Issue: A process won't terminate.
- Some system processes are protected by macOS and cannot be terminated by user applications.
- Try Force Kill (SIGKILL) instead of Terminate (SIGTERM) — this requires Pro.
- For protected system processes, you may need to use Terminal with sudo privileges.
-
Issue: CPU percentages seem unusually high.
- ProcessGenie shows CPU usage per process, which can exceed 100% on multi-core Macs (e.g., 400% means 4 full cores).
- The per-core view at the top shows individual core utilization for a clearer picture.
- ProcessGenie uses exponential moving average smoothing — values may differ slightly from Activity Monitor's instantaneous readings.
-
Issue: Purchase not recognized / Pro features locked.
- Go to Settings and click 'Restore Purchases'.
- Ensure you're signed into the correct Apple ID.
- Check your internet connection and try again.
